2022 SD City Council Races: District Eight - Nothing to See Here
Barrio Logan and the Southernmost portions of San Diego make up District 8 of the City Council, and were untouched by this year’s redistricting.
In 2018 now-incumbent councilmember Vivian Moreno beat Antonio Martinez by 548 votes. This year’s primary was a repeat of that contest, and it looks like voters approved of Moreno’s performance, because she won with 64% of the vote.
Neither candidate is seriously campaigning for the general election.

Media: 2022 election: Q&A with Vivian Moreno, candidate for San Diego City Council District 8
Moreno was a leading voice opposed to the city’s legal settlement involving the property at 101 Ash Street, correctly (I think) assuming the acquisition of the property was only viable if the building was to be torn down as part of a larger public/private real estate deal.
She’s now taking some time off…

Martinez, who works as a congressional community representative for Congressman Juan Vargas, essentially suspended his campaign after receiving just 36% of the vote in the June primary. He has filed no fundraising reports for his campaign.

Next Up: Well, that’s it folks. I’ve managed –with the help of Thomas Ultican– to report on all the electoral contests I set out to cover. Another one or two may sneak in, depending on time and importance.
Over the next week I’ll be updating those posts and going through financial reports looking for trends giving insight into the assorted campaigns’ intentions. (I’ll also have some analysis of national, state, and local current events.)
I wish to repeat my assertion that little importance should be attached to individual donations; lots of wealthier donors seek to cover all the bases in the hope of easier access down the road. It’s patterns of contributions coming from specific special interest groups and the activities of independent expenditure campaigns.
On or about October 10, I’ll publish a comprehensive overview with links to original reporting and my suggestions about who to vote for.
These election-based posts have been popular, and I want to thank you all for dropping by to read what I have to say. Be sure to share my reporting on social media so it can reach a wider audience.
