Legacy media outlets nearly always focus on numbers when it comes to reporting on protests, and some resisters have taken the bait. While it’s true that 3.5% of the population protesting can bring a change in governments, the rest of that equation often gets ignored, namely that the protests are widespread and regular.
I’ll call readers’ attention to the recent No Kings! Protests on June 14; in the wake of the event too many online warriors were trumpeting a Twelve Million participants estimate. Err, not so fast, folks.
Using (self-reported or observer) numbers from 92% of the 2,300 estimated sites, We The People Dissent estimates that between 4.1 and 5.2 million protesters showed up. This makes No Kings! the third largest protest in US history. (#1 First Earth Day, 1970, #2 Hands Across America, 1986). GREAT JOB!
Big one-time events aren’t going to stop the Trump Train to Totalitarianism. We can not rely on press coverage to make things happen. Hence Good Trouble Lives On is deliberately focused on spreading the news as far and wide as possible. Also, many organizers are getting people together for the long haul via virtual events. I strongly suggest that readers consider participating in one of these organizing sessions.
The weekly calendar of resistance events appears in this space every Thursday until Trump shuts down Substack, the platform for this blog.
