A Moment in History - Things Are About to Get Serious
Also: San Diego Resistance Calendar June 12-20, 2025
There’s no way of predicting the outcomes in the coming week, but rest assured that events taking place will be seriously impactful in a way occurring once in a lifetime. I’ll run down a few reasons for my thinking today.
The 2000+ No Kings Day protests throughout the US (and Mexico!) are going to be the largest expression of opposition to the Trump regime to date. There are at least 15 events locally (listed below), with hundreds more throughout California, plus an announced No Kings event in Ensenada. I expect that events of the last week will galvanize attendance at these demonstrations nationwide.
Aggressive detention actions by immigration authorities, backed by other federal enforcement agencies, have sparked demonstrations nationwide this week. The New York Times reports that Thursday’s actions, in addition to Los Angeles, occurred in Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Boston; Chicago; Dallas; Denver; Las Vegas; Minneapolis; New York; Omaha, Neb.; Philadelphia; San Antonio; San Francisco; Seattle; and St. Louis. Many of these demonstrations have involved thousands of people, taking to the streets with little notice.
The growing number of protests has led to threats of national guard activation in more places. Texas Governor Greg Abbott isn’t waiting for a call from Washington, saying he’s going ahead with troop deployments regardless. With more than 50 events planned throughout the Lone Star state, the logistics of this scare tactic should be interesting to watch.
Protests around the country are having an effect, reflected in the latest Quinnipiac polling, which shows support for the President and his policies cratering.
By 53% to 27%, voters OPPOSE the so-called Big Beautiful Bill. Only 67% of GOP voters support it vs 2% of Democrats and 20% of Independents.
Trump job approval DOWN to 38% (53% disapprove).
On immigration, only 43% approve, 54% disapprove.
On deportations, 40% approve, 56% disapprove.
On the economy, 40% approve, 56% disapprove.
On trade, 38% approve, 57% disapprove.
On universities, 37% approve, 54% disapprove.
On Ukraine, 34% approve, 57% disapprove.
Only 10% support cuts to Medicaid and Medicare
Quinnipiac polling is taken seriously by the GOP, and you should expect some presidential theatrics in response to the bad news. The President was booed on Wednesday at a Kennedy Center performance of Les Miserables, plus seating near the stage was chock full of drag queens.
Poll analyst G Elliott Morris found that:
The only real part of [Trump’s] agenda that’s popular in immigration is deporting convicted violent criminals—so you get about 87 percent support for deporting those people. That one makes sense. And basically everyone else, Americans say, Don’t deport them.
Thursday morning, the President acknowledged at least some of the prevailing sentiment, saying that aggressive immigration crackdowns are hurting hotels and farmers and that there are changes coming to focus on removing criminals.
From The Guardian:
California national guards troops and marines deployed to Los Angeles to help restore order after days of protest against the Trump administration have told friends and family members they are deeply unhappy about the assignment and worry their only meaningful role will be as pawns in a political battle they do not want to join.
Three different advocacy organisations representing military families said they had heard from dozens of affected service members who expressed discomfort about being drawn into a domestic policing operation outside their normal field of operations. The groups said they have heard no countervailing opinions.

It’s opinion day at the Supreme Court, which has at least 27 opinions in 32 cases due this month. Thus far (there’s more to come, but I have to hit “publish” sooner than later) The Supreme Court narrowly ruled to make it easier for students with disabilities to sue to enforce their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act and other laws enacted to ensure that disabled children get appropriate schooling.
***
The US has pulled family members and non-essential personnel from the embassies in Iraq, Bahrain, and Kuwait in advance of what NBC News is reporting will be an Israeli operation aimed at Iran. There’s nothing like a lil’ Mid-East war to shake up the world’s economies and governments.
***
Finally, the President’s Big Beautiful Military Parade on Saturday is having trouble drawing a crowd, as ads have appeared on Craigslist offering compensation (in bitcoin, lol) for people to sit in key positions visible from the grandstand. They’re offering free “red hats” for participants.
The parade, which started out as an effort to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Army, will feature thousands of troops and armored vehicles tearing up streets in DC. It was scheduled for late afternoon in a nod to DC’s notorious hot weather; I saw a forecast of an 85% chance of rain and thunderstorms for this time frame.

The flag doesn’t belong to Donald Trump. It belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen. We’re making it. On June 14th, we’re showing up everywhere he isn’t—to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings. A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action.
