I hate that learning of President Biden’s decision not to run leaves me with the uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach -the same feeling I had upon learning that Hillary lost in 2016- has not gone away.
I correctly read the tea leaves last week, saying President Biden would exit the presidential contest on Sunday. This was just a matter of basic analysis, I saw where the noise was coming from and counted on widespread political cowardice.
Don’t get me wrong; I am disgusted by the backstabbing involved in getting the President to drop out. A bunch of mediocre (mostly) white men did their best to defame a good president. A bunch of complicit media outlets and pundits were accessories to this crime.
The time to debate the future of the Democratic party should be the primary season in 2028.
In particular I want to call out Politico and the New York Times, to point out that they’re wolves in sheep’s clothing. I’m not saying their reporters don’t do good work; I am saying that as an institution neither outlet cares about this country as a democracy. They have calculated that their future viability is more secure as stenographers for a psychopath.
Was Biden dropping out the right decision? I don’t know. If I saw everybody jumping on the Kamala Harris bandwagon I’d say yes. But this air of indecision so inherent of democratic politicians is a lot worse than a shitty debate performance.
The GOP will drag out misogyny and racism to denigrate Harris. Trump is already whining about the “Kamala cackle.” So what? I think there’s more respect to be had by standing up to bullies than simpering away.
How do we beat Donald J Trump and his merry band of MAGAts? With unity and the willingness to do the work. Let the naysayers corrupt the zeitgeist with doubts and pro democracy forces lose. None of those assholes will suffer in a Trump administration. Millions of other people will.
How will President Kamala Harris do? My bet is that she’ll be more conservative on many issues than Joe Biden. But on the domestic issues that matter, I have no fear about her inclinations. I suspect she’ll not be a godsend for Palestinians. I suppose the gang in the intelligence community will find her engaging.
With Kamala as the nominee, she will be the only candidate in the race who believes at least to some degree in empathy, freedom, democracy and the rule of law.
I’m a realist. The choices for president will be Kamala Harris or Donald Trump. That’s what’s on the menu. Third party candidates and “principled non-voting” are votes for Trump as far as the world is concerned.
Beating Trump by a few thousand votes in battleground states won’t do. His political ass has got to be grass and the people need to be the lawnmower. I’ll have to hold my nose when voting for certain democrats. I’ll do it and live to fight again.
I think since Joe endorsed Harris, we need to get behind her even if she isn’t a first choice. ( we are out of time for debate) With the supreme court’s war on women this is the perfect time to go for a woman for president.
Excellently said in multiple ways. Thank you! I hope we can get past the misogyny and the racism. Sadly, they are big hurdles in this society.
