In this particular incarnation of my musings I have posted roughly 2000 times. If you figure an average of 1500 words per post, it works out to 3 million words since the Free Press folded. Had those words been a series of novels, I could be rich and famous.
I’ve chosen a different path; the discipline of research, analysis, and dissemination putting contemporary socio-economic events into context is deeply satisfying. Whatever ends up as words on a screen is dictated by my fingers acting as a conveyance to what’s been learned. Sometimes I feel as though they have a mind of their own.
I am so grateful for the attention these pages get from readers and subscribers. I strive every day to make my offerings worth your time; the personal payoff is in audience growth, which has surged lately. Thousands of people are hearing something I hope makes this crazy era we’re existing in more understandable.
The voluntary donations that come with some subscriptions are supporting approx. 20 non-legacy publications. I’m proud to be part of a creative class that’s chosen a freer and more sustainable form of expression.
So five paragraphs in, I’ll get to the point: I’m taking some time off, starting today. I’ll be posting a bit late next week, taking another couple of days off the following week, and returning to the groove by the twenty first of this month.
I’ll be traveling for both family business and pleasure, by auto and train in the fabulous Southwest. Who knows? I might get up the courage for a travelog of sorts.
See you soon. And don’t take any wooden crypto coins or tokens. (21st century Dad joke)
I consider travel one of the great joys of my life and love that you are taking time away for awhile to enjoy it. Reading your column daily ranks high on my list of things I must do to off balance the real world news with your "voice of reason" approach. You are indeed, a joy too! Have a wonderful visit with our beautiful southwest country!
At the risk of embarrassing you, I love you Doug Porter! This is why I read your column religiously. You synthesize things in a way that makes your writing very readable, doesn't waste my time, and makes me laugh on the regular with some well chosen snark. Enjoy your travels.
