Impeachment Today: Trump’s Witness Intimidation Was an Impeachable Offense in Real Time
During the course of testimony before Congress by Marie L. Yovanovitch, former American ambassador to Ukraine, President Trump issued a public attack on her service as a diplomat.
This was not an attempt to challenge her testimony. This was not a denial of the facts already in evidence before the House Intelligence Committee. This was not a proclamation of his innocence.
It was witness intimidation. Period.
It’s also worth noting that no such responses from the President occurred during the testimony of George Kent, deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs or William Taylor, the current acting United States Ambassador to Ukraine.
So we can safely assume Trump’s fear and loathing of a woman with credibility weighed in on his decision to denigrate her 33 year career in the foreign service. ‘Many people are saying’ this amounts to misogyny.
Congressman Adam Schiff interrupted questioning by counsel Daniel Goldman to inform Yovanovitch about the President’s tweets.
Schiff asked Yovanovitch what impact these attacks have on other witnesses.
“It’s very intimidating.” she says.
FYI #1- The White House version of the July 25th phone call does not contain any criticism of the Ambassador by the Ukrainian President. Trump just made that up.
FYI #2-- These types of tweets were among what Special Counsel Robert Mueller considered instances of witness tampering in his investigation into whether Trump committed obstruction of justice.
