The assault on reality and common sense coming from the White House is intensifying and will continue at least through President Donald J Trump’s birthday on June 14.
Aside from displays designed to assert Dear Leader’s dominance, there are two motivating factors:
Getting the Big Beautiful Budget Bill through the Senate with minimal revisions
Distracting from Elon Musk’s break from supporting the Big Beautiful Budget Bill
Musk’s tirades on X aren’t prompted by any desire to show empathy for those it injures; he’s mad because it doesn’t cut deeper.
I’m not saying activists should ignore the racism of the travel ban, the insult of whitewashing Harvey Milk’s name (and others) from naval ships, the Justice Department investigation into Pres. Joe Biden’s mental decline (aimed at undoing pardons), and another round of punitive measures against institutions of higher learning, etc. Those things must be opposed and spoken about, but Dear Leader’s self-coronation is an important context.
Most of what Trump is trying to accomplish in terms of undermining the government is enabled by his budget proposal. He’s creating the infrastructure for two Americas, one for his MAGA believers, and another for the rest of us.
Russ Rosenfeld at The New Republic explains:
Just like any made man in the Mafia, to be a member of the MAGA Club you must vow allegiance to the group. The mob has omertà, its code of silence. MAGA has its own version—omaga, you might call it: Don’t ever speak ill of the president or question his motives. You must buy wholly into the MAGA narrative to be considered a full MAGA member. Like any multilevel marketing scheme, the more you pay into the cult and spread its gospel, the more privileges you earn. It’s why we see Cabinet meetings wherein department heads try to one-up each other in their praise of the president. Like any other gang of scheming capos, they’re trying to please the Don. They’re afraid of being turned out of the club.
There is a principle known as Wilhoit’s Law, deriving from a classical music composer who first posted it on the site Crooked Timber. It states, “Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.”
The Congressional Budget Office just released brutal numbers derived from the Big Beautiful Budget Bill showing it will add even more to the deficit and kick many more people off health coverage than previously thought.
We who oppose Trump and the agenda he fronts for are stuck with an Obamacare-type dilemma. Polling shows public support for the Big Beautiful Budget Bill (+7) and public opposition to the House Republican’s Budget Bill (-9) even though they are the same.
Remember the Tea Party stoking sentiment against Obamacare? Well, significant numbers of Americans still oppose the 44th President’s healthcare plan and at the same time support the Affordable Care Act.
The future of healthcare is top of mind for many voters, and the GOP counter-argument to those who worry about budget cuts is to make people think reducing programs will only affect other people.
Although ‘concern’ over the deficit is a bullshit issue, arguments claiming to reduce the deficit are winners for most causes. Eighty percent of Americans prefer raising taxes on the rich over cutting programs like Social Security and Medicare to reduce the deficit.
Remember these points as we approach No Kings Day and signs to be carried at rallies. The massive transfer of wealth upward on the economic scale since 1980 set the scene for Trump and Project 2025’s concepts, and it will accelerate that transfer with the budget under consideration.
Tax the rich should always be an announced objective these days. Among Democrats, even those pushing the ‘abundance agenda’, this sentiment is and will be the dividing line between those who will acquiesce to Trump’s mania and those who won’t.
Nothing really changes until taxation is redistributed so that the wealth actually contribute a fair share to society.

The Big Day
The flag doesn’t belong to Donald Trump. It belongs to us. We’re not watching history happen. We’re making it.
On June 14th, we’re showing up everywhere he isn’t—to say no thrones, no crowns, no kings. Check out nokings.org for more information.
A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Subscriber Notice: I’m taking a long weekend. See you next Wednesday.
Excited that you are including the LWV Criminal Justice meeting on this list. There's several Black-led community organizations doing good work in that space, too. North County Equity and Justice Coalition/Saving Lives in Custody California holds frequent rallies and press conferences at SD detention facilities to bring awareness to jail deaths and the Racial Justice Coalition San Diego holds fairly regular town halls with the legal team bringing the class action jail condition lawsuit against the County. Both would make excellent additions to your resistance calendar.
Thank you, Doug
