Reopen California? Recall Newsom? A Truth Sandwich About Carl DeMaio’s Latest 'Polling'
The conventional wisdom about fighting misinformation in the news media says to lead with the truth first, so here it is: Californians overwhelmingly back the shelter in place and other restrictions for as long as needed to counter the effects of Covid-19, according to polling from the California Health Care Foundation (via Ipsos), UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, and Public Policy Institute of California.
Though I remain skeptical, Gov. Newsom has announced that much of California will begin a gradual reopening process (Phase 2) on Friday.
Having told the truth, let’s get down to the latest propaganda from individuals and outfits saying the economy is more important than the lives of Americans.
Neither rain nor snow nor pandemic will stop California’s conservative grifters from peddling their wares. Trumpanistas and their fellow anti-vaxx travelers are going all in on excuses, misinformation, along with ginned up public opinion polling in their quest to protect the interests of the one percenters and nihilists among us.
Today’s trigger for this writer was a press release --promoted on KUSI’s truthiness broadcasts-- from three time loser Carl DeMaio. His Reform California operation --which is ultimately about building mailing lists-- is looking to jump on the GOP’s Highway to Hell campaign through California.
The headline for this DeMaioist propaganda is Poll Shows California Voters Support Reopening, Support the Right to Protest, and Oppose Covid-19 Payouts to Illegal Immigrants.
We’re led to believe in the last two weeks since a legit polling operation checked the public’s pulse there has been an upwelling of support for increasing California’s Covid-19 infection and death rates. (See how I did that? Clever, huh.)
Almost three in four voters (72%) say, according to Reform California, let’s get it on. And how about calling people "illegals?" Isn't that classy?
Truth, first, then a sample, with question number two.
TRUTH: "Any" public protests have not been banned. There have been protests throughout the state and police have shown remarkable restraint in the face of some conduct we all know wouldn't tolerated from non-white persons. One person has been told she's under investigation and could maybe end up with a fine.
Q2: Some Californians believe the Coronavirus restrictions have gone too far in infringing on their Constitutional rights. Government officials have banned any public protests against Coronavirus policies. Should these individuals be allowed to protest and express their views freely OR do you support the decision to arrest organizers of protests and fine participants of protests $1,000 each?
Allow protesters to express their views: 58%
Arrest protesters and fine them: 27%
Not sure: 15%
I’ll spare readers most of the questions and results, mostly because the questions are conveniently framed to lead respondents to the “correct” answer.
Check out the last question, which shows the ultimate goal of this bit of manipulation:
Q8: If we reached June 15th and California still was not reopened for business, but other states in the US were reopened and doing well; would you sign a petition to initiate a recall against Governor Gavin Newsom to send a message that he needs to consider reopening soon?
Since the first two efforts at recalling Newsom failed so spectacularly, it looks like DeMaio’s sniffing around for round three.
Finally, let’s wrap up this truth sandwich with some sobering statistics.
Reported US coronavirus deaths:
Mar. 5: 12 deaths
Apr. 5: 9,643 deaths
May 5: 71,043 deaths
Reported US coronavirus cases:
Mar. 5: 227 cases
Apr. 5: 337,620 cases
May 5: 1,203,892 cases

While the public is being told by a certain crowd that it’s time to get back to normal, some people are being given special dispensation.
Take former Representative Duncan Hunter, for instance.
In March, Hunter was sentenced to prison for illegally spending campaign money on personal expenses, including a family vacation to Italy and immense bar tabs.
Now his attorney and the government are asking U.S. District Court Judge Thomas J. Whelan to push his self-surrender date to Jan. 4, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
I’d be willing to bet that Hunter belongs to the “Covid-19 is a fraud” club, given his past record of buying in on bullsh*t causes promoted by the right..
