SCANDAL: President Biden Spills Grey Poupon on His Tan Suit
After four years of faux drama and 30,573 false or misleading claims made by the Former Guy, you’d think the media would welcome a little normalcy.
Instead, we’ve been treated to a weekend of whining, whining, and more whining from members of the Washington press corps.
I am reminded of the shock and awe of President Obama admitting that he liked Grey Poupon on a hot dog. Or the danger to national security occurring after he was spotted wearing a tan suit. We’re so fortunate that the Canadians didn’t launch a warhead filled with poutine during that crisis.
The Associated Press detailed the shocking news about Biden going home to Delaware for three of the eight weekends since he’s been president. He hasn’t played golf, or forced the secret service to pay him for the privilege of having a place to sleep.
His predecessor visited a Trump-owned or branded property on three out of every 10 days through the first three years of his administration.
Even more concerning about the Delaware trip is footage of the president leaving Catholic mass with his grandchildren. He was --gasp!-- wearing a suit that wasn’t black or blue. It was more like a greyish tan and there was NO TIE.
Then there’s the alarming news about Biden’s failure to have any formal press conferences. Here’s Eric Wemple at the Washington Post:
After a Tuesday appearance on his administration’s response to covid-19, President Biden took a couple of questions from the assembled media. When would things get back to normal? “My hope is by this time next year,” responded the president, noting that the timeline depends on people acting responsibly. Then he confirmed that he’d just received a briefing on the southern border. What did he learn? “A lot,” responded Biden.
That’s what you call a “short question-and-answer" session. Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, uses that very term as part of a matrix comparing accessibility from president-to-president. Thus far, President Biden has held 38such sessions through as of Wednesday, according to Kumar.
Even taken together, those fragmentary interactions don’t equal a formal, solo news conference, something for which Biden is now overdue. As reported by CNN, Biden’s 15 most recent predecessors all held solo news conferences within 33 days of taking office. Biden has been in office for 43 days.
Find me a public opinion poll where there’s any indication that the American people give a damn. Based on the “ratios” (like vs.response) I’ve seen, this is a really stupid question to be asking at this time.
From where I stand, the only thing likely to come out of a press conference will be a reporter demanding details about Biden’s German Shepherd nipping a Secret Service agent.
It's worth noting that our current president hasn't picked fights with any celebrities, pissed off any foreign leaders, lied through his teeth, and nobody on his team or advisory staff has resigned, been fired, or gotten indicted.
Rather than ask how many days the country has gone without a formal press conference, maybe asking about how close the nation came to having its election results overturned by a raging mob would be more appropriate.
Eventually President Joe Biden will do something worthy of rebuke. He’s human.
And when that time comes it will be appropriate for the nation’s press corps to be more demanding about answers. For now, I’m hard pressed to think of anything where the American public has been denied access to the President’s thinking.
Press Secretary Jen Psaki has, thus far, done 28 press briefings, answering questions about covid, vaccinations, gas prices, trade with the U.K., Trump’s tax returns, leadership of the Office of Management and Budget, troop levels in Iraq and Syria, immigration and other topics.
Guess what? Most of the networks don’t cover them, as opposed to the cage matches staged by Kayleigh McEnany and Sarah Sanders. Those press briefings got coverage, not because any truth was told, but because reporters were anxious to see blood drawn.
Here's columnist David Frum:
For me, a top concern about the Biden presidency was: Would this highly emotional and often over-talkative man muster the self-discipline required to succeed at the job? By *not* talking, Biden has already answered the most urgent question I had.
Click bait journalism of the sort we’re seeing now is exactly why readers don’t trust legacy media. There are real stories to pursue. Some of them may involve scandal or corruption. I’d advise the Washington Press corps to keep the fable of the little boy who cried wolf in mind. Because when that Big Story hits the streets, nobody will give a crap.
Here’s Trevor Noah’s tongue in cheek version of the Biden’s administration scandals and drama:
