SD Schools Ready to Take a Stand on Vaccines: Cops, Not So Much
Let’s seal the deal on mandates.
The area’s largest school district is on a path to requiring vaccines among eligible staff and students. San Diego Unified School Board members are going to publicly discuss the topic on Tuesday, September 28, at an online board board meeting.
Needless to say, the usual suspects are doing their best to gin up rancor, especially since an online format means content will matter more than disruptive performance. Trust me when I say they’ll find a way to spread fear and division; I can only hope appropriate security measures are in place for students, staff, and board members.
The San Diego Police Department has offered up solid evidence that protecting and serving citizens is not part of their job description.
Even though COVID 19 is the leading cause of death for law enforcement, the city’s police officers association president is facing a recall because he hasn’t told Mayor Todd Gloria to shove it during discussions about a mandate.
Once again, the usual suspects (KUSI) are actively involved in spinning this story. It’s NOT that they are reporting this story; it’s how they are framing it.
Roughly nine out of 10 members of the San Diego Police Officers Association who responded to a recent survey oppose COVID-19 vaccination mandates, and about 45% of them say they would rather be fired than comply with such requirements, the head of the SDPOA confirmed Friday.
Of the 733 officers who took part in the poll — about 38% of all the personnel represented by the union — some 65% said they would consider resigning from their jobs if the city follows through with a plan to require coronavirus inoculation beginning in November.
Missing from this reportage is the fact that 49% of SDPD officers are, in fact, already, vaccinated. I kinda doubt they were interested (and the SDPOA’s numbers reflected this) in sharing their feelings about getting something done that's already happened.
As David Frum noted, “This one was based on a response rate under 40% - in other words, a huge over-sampling of the cranks.”
San Diego’s inoculation deadline for all its employees is Nov. 2, meaning there’s about one month left because people are not considered fully vaccinated until 14 days after receiving their final dose. The Union Tribune and other outlets have suggested there are last minute negotiations in progress.
Today’s front page report about rising crime is, again, devoid of context; the city remains one of the safest places in the US to live, and would be a lot safer if guns and ammo were more of a hobby than a religion. The number 4 is indeed 100% bigger than the number 2, but if 4 is the number of reported crimes of a certain category there should be no cause for panic.
Why deny the opening to turn a challenge into an opportunity? We could find a way to have a safe city without enabling people who have no more respect for others than organized crime. Just don’t call it Defund the Police. I’m sure some marketing genius could put a palatable spin on it.
I’ll bet that Mayor Todd Gloria (who would never do this) would raise one eyebrow over the thought of reminding police they serve the public first, the discussion could end up encompassing all kinds of reforms.
It doesn’t make any difference whether it’s a local city government, a county, or even a branch of state government; everybody has tiptoed around police unions for too long. Forty five states already have laws allowing decertifying officers for serious misconduct. In California, the move to enact such legislation could best be described as a saga, involving way too many of the most powerful people in government.
Time is on the City’s side here. According to Fortune, nearly half of employers will require jabs for jobs by the end of the year. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is drafting a rule mandating that all businesses with 100 or more workers require 80 million employees to either get vaccinated against the coronavirus or face mandatory weekly testing.
Misinformation and denialism about the pandemic were the driving forces for the California gubernatorial recall election among its grassroots advocates, even if its impetus grew out of the mish-mash of racism providing the basis for unity among the Trumpanistas.
We, the sane people who’d like to get on with our lives, won. They, the people who think tearing it all down and restarting is viable, lost. This wasn’t about Gavin Newsom’s dining habits. And it wasn’t about Larry Elder’s libertarian nightmares.
The results of the voting --while not finalized-- have paved the way for an evolving consensus to just. get. it. Done. The time for excuses is over. Opposition to getting shots in arms is noisy but doesn’t have enough power to endanger careers of officials and executives.
More than 210 million people in the US have been vaccinated. Not a single case of testicular excrescence has been documented, despite Tucker Carlson’s attempts to turn celebrity ignorance (which they’re certainly entitled to) into a first amendment issue.
While hard answers about efficacy await longer term analysis, it’s clear the statistically small number of people who get post-jab infections suffer less harm and are more likely to survive.
Nearly 500,000: That's the number of children diagnosed with COVID from Sept. 2 to Sept. 9, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Use whatever term you’d like. Basta! Enough! Get Over It, Already.
I’m over being empathetic about the perils of people who don’t care about others. I’ll let Abby Zimet’s observations be my close for today.
On Friday, the largest public art installation on the National Mall since 1987's AIDS quilt - which likewise served as bitter testimony to both loss and criminal negligence - will open to bring those costs home.
In America: Remember, the work of artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg along with a D.C. anthropologist, a Colorado software engineer and an army of volunteers, creates a sea of 662,000 white flags, each symbolizing one U.S. COVID death - though they've now risen to over 667,000.
With almost four miles of walking paths, the memorial seeks to connect those who've grieved in isolation and to visualize "the vastness of (the) loss." From Sept. 17 to Oct. 3, people can visit, personalize flags for a lost loved one, or remotely dedicate a flag. By Thursday, workers had installed 450,000 flags, with "more daily, as losses mount." "Every one of those represent an empty place at the table, a missing voice," says one. "We must do better." Many furiously agree.
Cue Wendy Molyneux' sacred, profane, what-the-fuck-is-your-problem piece in McSweeney's titled, "Oh My Fucking God, Get the Fucking Vaccine Already, You Fucking Fucks." Shrieking to a witless populace that everything has side effects and so what if you get a sore arm for a day so a kid doesn't wind up on a ventilator, she speaks for us all: "Fuck you. Get vaccinated. Fuck."
