Surveys Say: Not Good News for Duncan Hunter, Kamala Harris, & Donald Trump
Five months from today, Californians will begin voting by mail in the 2020 primary.
A new survey from the Public Policy Institute of California gives us a glimpse of what statewide voters are feeling at the moment. Other surveys report on the 50th Congressional District contest and public sentiment on impeachment.
For President: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (23%), former VP Joe. Biden (22%), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (21%) are in a three-way tie among registered Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents. Sen. Kamala Harris (8%) and Mayor Pete Buttigieg (6%) are on the next tier.
More than half (53%) of voters with a preference would consider supporting another candidate.
Who will replace Rep. Duncan Hunter? Polling by SurveyUSA for the Union-Tribune and 10News. The overall leader is Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar (31%), followed by Republicans Carl DeMaio (20%) and Darrell Issa (16%). Incumbent/indicted Congressman Duncan Hunter placed fourth (11%). The top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, will appear on the November 2020 general election ballot.
From the Union-Tribune:
The 50th District has more registered Republicans than Democrats, and that was reflected in the poll. Of the likely voters surveyed, 44 percent are Republican and 30 percent Democrat; 24 percent are independent. Among the Republicans, DeMaio leads, followed closely by Issa. As the only Democrat in the race, Campa-Najjar was the overwhelming choice among those voters and also polled first with independents.
Campa-Najjar also scored well in the “character of the candidate” question, getting half the vote of those who consider that the most important issue, 31 points ahead of DeMaio. Three-fourths of the voters who ranked “holding the president accountable” as their chief concern favored Campa-Najjar, 15 times more than the next competitor.
But among the top four candidates in the overall poll, Campa-Najjar also had the largest percentage of voters, 32, who said they are “unfamiliar” with him. DeMaio was next, at 21 percent.
DeMaio’s war chest. POLITICO reports: "Former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio will report that he raised some $1.3 million from about 20,000 donors in the two months after declaring his run for Rep. Duncan Hunter's seat — a massive sum for a House race still months away from the primary."
Not reported in DeMaio’s fundraising haul: Wednesday’s New York Log Cabin GOP event at Trump Tower.
New USA Today poll:Americans support House impeaching Trump by 45-38; support Senate conviction and removal by 44-35 (!), AND 30% of Republicans say pressure on Ukraine to smear Biden is an abuse of power.
Register to vote or check your registration status before the 2020 primaries on Tuesday, March 3
