Not sure I get this.

To switch banks, at least where you have a checking account:

1. Open new account (e.g., at a credit union).

2. Move your direct deposits and ACH automatic debits to the new account.

3. Remove overdraft protection (if any) from the old account.

4. Visit the old institution and inform them that you are closing the account. If there is a remaining balance get a money order for the amount. (It is important to inform the old institution that the account is being closed in order to avoid low balance fees at the next statement.)

5. Done.

I've done this multiple times in my life.
