The Reviews Are In; FBI Raid on Mar a Lago Is a Ratings Hit!
The FBI searched former president Donald Trump’s residence at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday. And, judging by the over-reactions from his supporters, he must have something mighty big to hide.
I don’t know why the Magats are panicking. I’ve been told that if you’ve done nothing wrong and simply comply with law enforcers, you have nothing to worry about.
According to The New York Times, the search appears to be focused on material — including "many pages of classified documents" — that Trump allegedly brought with him when he left the White House.
(All presidential records are owned by the public and should be automatically transferred into the custody of the National Archives as soon as a president leaves office, per the Presidential Records Act of 1978.)
Trump announced the raid in a statement, saying that his "beautiful home" was "under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents."
"They even broke into my safe!" he complained, alleging "prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don't want me to run for President in 2024."
On Monday evening, a collection of vehicles bearing Trump flags and other signage gathered outside Mar-a-Lago, presuming that their leader was holed up inside under siege as authorities swarmed the property. Rumors were rampant that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was sending state police to evict the feds and/or that the search was somehow related to the Q prophecy of a day of reckoning.
The former chief executive was not at his Florida residence at the time; he was in New York. He was informed of the search by son Eric.
This evening (Tuesday) a group of House Republicans are set to meet with the ex-president for dinner at his club in Bedminster, N.J., in a show of solidarity.
Indiana’s Representative Jim Banks, chairman of the Republican Study Committee, is bringing a group of the committee’s members to meet with Trump, an event planned before the search, which has now turned into an opportunity for members of the House Republican conference to demonstrate support.
The elected Maga-wing of the party sees the FBI. search as a rallying cry just weeks before the midterm elections. By portraying the raid as an act of government intrusion, they believe it’s an easier way to defend Trump than continuing to spout conspiracy theories about the Jan. 6 hearings.
While Trump and his supporters are making a big deal about the propriety of the FBI search, they could, if they so desired, inform the public as to the rationale, since the former President’s lawyers are in possession of a copy of the warrant. (It’s standard practice to leave a copy of any court orders with either the target of an investigation or their legal representatives.)
The GOP has wasted no time fundraising off the event, no doubt in a hurry to grab some cash before any more damning information became public knowledge.
On Monday evening, the Republican National Committee sent out a text linking to their WinRed page.
"THIS IS NOT A DRILL: UNPRECEDENTED move Biden's FBI RAIDS Pres. Trump's home. Time to take back Congress," the text said.
"Never has there been a more important time to take back our country and STAND FOR FREEDOM," the landing page says. "We're counting on YOU! Donate ANY AMOUNT RIGHT NOW to show your support for the GOP to take back Congress and STOP JOE BIDEN."
Trump's Save America PAC sent out a fundraising text on Tuesday morning.
"It's time for EVERY PATRIOT to step up and stand against the Left's reckless WITCH HUNTS and political persecution of President Trump!" the landing page soliciting donations says. "Please rush in a donation IMMEDIATELY to publicly stand with President Trump against this NEVERENDING WITCH HUNT!"
The National Republican Congressional Committee also sent out a fundraising email urging supporters to "stand with President Trump."
"This is OUTRAGEOUS, Fellow Conservative!" the email said. "Joe Biden's Deep State has WEAPONIZED the FBI and Department of Justice to hunt down President Trump and destroy its political enemies. This is what happens in third world countries! This is the stuff of dictatorships — we cannot let Joe Biden and his FBI cronies get away with their shameful act of political persecution!"
Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy put Attorney General Merrick Garland on notice, telling him to “preserve documents” and clear his schedule.
Preserve documents, eh? That’s a novel concept for a party whose leader reportedly flushed classified materials down the toilet at the White House.
Meanwhile, the MAGA-meltdown continues.
