They’ve laid off or canned much of their staff. Here’s the letter I received this morning.(I currently pay $19+ monthly)
Dear Doug,
Thank you for subscribing to The San Diego Union-Tribune. Your subscription is vital to our ability to produce journalism that informs and illuminates. In order to maintain the high-quality journalism our subscribers expect, we sometimes have to adjust rates to offset rising costs.
You are receiving this notice to inform you that your San Diego Union-Tribune Unlimited Digital Subscription will automatically renew on 11/28/2023 and your subscription rate will increase to $27.72 every 4 weeks, unless you cancel. Your designated payment method will be automatically charged $27.72 every 4 weeks. Price is subject to change upon at least 7 days’ prior notice.
All subscriptions are CONTINUOUS, which means your subscription will automatically renew and you are automatically charged until you cancel the subscription. You have the ability to cancel by clicking the cancel option on your account online at www.sandiegouniontribune.com/cancel, emailing customer.service@sduniontribune.com, or calling 1-619-299-4141. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your then current subscription/billing period without any pro-rata refund. No more charges will occur post-cancellation.
That is a tough question but I am renewing for now.
I did not receive that letter, probably because I have been paying by check half-yearly at more than $500.
I will renew my subscription, but it cannot go on for long. I now understand how the holding company was able to destroy the newspapers they bought. Journalism, in print, was made unaffordable to most. The Fourth Estate is being destroyed in many ways. I grieve.
