The Trump Campaign's Desperation As Voters Flock to the Polls
This year's presidential race IS different from 2016. What worked for Republicans four years ago: misogyny, anti-establishment sentiment, and the promise of government run like a successful billionaire’s business are all not in play.
On a fundamental level --going beyond simple hero worship-- what the Trump campaign has left in its political armory are theocrats (those who want the government run by their religious standards), racism (“they’re coming for your neighborhood”) and hyperbole driven by an ever changing list of conspiracy theories.
Republicans are desperately trying to "Hillary-ize" Biden, by launching conspiracy theories in days like they threw at HRC for years. They’re throwing every lie they can at the wall, seeing what sticks, then spewing faux outrage.
Tapping into the cult of QAnon beliefs, surrogate players for the president are now simply making sh*t up about an imagined connection between former Vice President Biden and pedophilia.
On Fox's "Sunday Morning Futures" program, host Maria Bartiromo prodded GOP congressman Ron Johnson about a connection between the Biden hard drive and "child pornography." There is no such connection.
The basis for the latest round of crapola is a story run by the New York Post, picked up in the Trump media echo room, and decidedly labeled as bogus by just about every other outlet.
Here’s David Folkenflik at NPR:
The New York Post's story and its ensuing allegations against Hunter Biden, based on the same cache of material, has propelled its corporate cousin as well. As the days tick down toward Election Day, Fox News took inspiration from the tabloid's reporting to unleash a fusillade against the former vice president across its most watched shows — like the grand finale of a fireworks display.
The story was brought to the Murdoch-owned paper by Rudy Giuliani and Steve Bannon, based on photos and emails copied off the hard drive of a laptop purported to belong to Hunter Biden.
The Post story (which reporters at the paper refused to allow their byline to appear on) suggests that Vice President Biden used his position to enrich his son Hunter.
If this all sounds familiar, it’s because the same storyline was part of the prosecution’s case in the impeachment hearings of Donald Trump. Last year, U.S. intelligence agencies also warned about a Russian disinformation campaign aimed at Biden including charges of corruption.
Upon any sort of critical examination, the NY Post story crumbles.
We are being asked to believe that Hunter Biden (who lived in California) flew to Delaware, got drunk (he’s been sober for years), dropped off a laptop for repair at a shop run by a guy who is legally blind and claims he can’t identify the customer, and that the Vice President’s son never bothered to pick up the device.
Oh, and the serial numbers listed for the hard drive in question indicates it was manufactured *after* being dropped off for repair.
I won’t go any further with this crapola of a story, except to note that the data in question was shared with the FBI months ago, who never acted on either the corruption charge or the pedophilia allegation.
Republicans are hoping to keep the story alive by asking leading questions of social media execs at a Senate hearing, since Twitter and Facebook both initially sought to limit the distribution of the Post story.
Then there’s the story of the former Vice President’s mansion.
Remember folks, you’re not just voting against Donald Trump in this election; you’ve voting to rid the country of all those who’ve enabled his lies.
